YOU LOVE BOOKS? CHECK THIS OUT- BOOK REVIEW

  

     Last Sunday, during our weekly open mic, one topic we discussed was  "What is your favourite African book this year and why?" A lot of people had different things to say (most of which I can't remember...Don't cut me please) I mentioned my two favorite books.

One of this books you may not consider Africanish, but it is a favorite anyway. Here goes....drum roll please... Lol just kidding:

THE SECRET LIVES OF BABA SEGI'S WIVES AND  GONE GIRL. (But we will discuss the secret lives of Baba Segi's wives first)

I loveeeee these books. Mainly because of one thing ; suspense.

 I love page turners. I love sitting at the edge of my seat; my nose buried in a page. My eyes darting back and forth, left and right like a rusty typewriter, sucking my cheeks... You know that kind of feeling. I love page turners, and while The secret lives of Baba Segi's wives centers around social issues e.g. Illiteracy, polygamy, rape, lesbianism. It is interesting.

 I was suspicious through out the book. I kept guessing ( I was right by the way) why Bolanle couldn't have a child. For those who haven't read it, Bolanle is the educated wife of Baba Segi ...well let me not ruin It for you.  

 Also I love the structure of the book. Instead of chapters, you had name tags, Bolanle, Seed etc. I love how the author handles the multiple characters, pov. We hear each character speak; different personalities, different lifestyles.There is a mixture of Third and first person narration, and it works.

Anyway, it is entertaining, funny and genuine. If you're a fan of  " OUR HUSBAND HAS GONE MAD AGAIN " you'll love it.

An Evening with Bards - Namse Peter Udosen

So finally it went down at Colab, the first episode of purplesilver open mic. It was an evening of fun and colourful words in Kaduna. Poets, artists and art lovers converged in the beautiful and inspiring space of Colab to engage and chill.
The evening kicked off with an interesting discuss on Dictatorship in Africa and the voice of the West. There was a seeming general consensus that every society defines the style of leadership that suits it. Some raised concerns of human rights violation by dictators.
Then the biz of the day, the elegant Mimi thrilled with a poem about the girl on her street, that reinforced self belief. Sada Malumfashi was his usual witty self with an excerpt from his short story. Shittu Fowora and Saddiq Dzukogi performed two beautiful poems that had us screaming for more.
We had fun fun and are looking forward to next Sunday. What are you waiting for? Be there!

Ake Art and Book Festival is around the corner again. Writer and Photographer Sesugh Anselm Ngutsav who is currently a presenter/producer of the only Literary Art radio program in Northern Nigeria; the program described as the most consistent in this area across the country, with international reach via its online streaming platform www.libertytvradio.com shares interesting images of Ake Festival from the 2014.

Sesugh Ngutsav who was acknowledged this year in the UNESCO #wordsofTolerance photo contest among the first 15 best images across the globe has been featured in the national daily, Daily Trust Newspaper’s Book Shelf column few months ago, 2016. He currently runs literary activities and events in Kaduna state, Nigeria alongside writing, photography and few others. 

He currently shares his images on Instagram: @Ngutsav, Twittter: Ngutsav1 and Facebook where he uses his full name. 

He hopes to share the images with the hashtag #thatAkeFestival in order to contribute his quota to the publicity of Ake Art and Book Festival and as well encourage the growth of literary arts in Nigeria. 

Sesugh advises those who appear in his images to freely use them or re-post freely with the simple regard for credit.
